Intro to FJs (Intermediate Sailing)

In 2012 DC Sail will be offering an Intro to FJs or Intermediate Sailing course once a month on Saturday & Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.

This course will teach you all the basics of small boat handling on our fleet of Flying Juniors (FJ).  You will learn how to properly rig and de-rig the boats, the theories behind boat balance & how to achieve proper sail trim. You will also be introduced to the basics of racing.

Registration to this course includes registration to the Summer Race Series that coincides with completion of the course.

Upon completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Rent an FJ with one crew
  • Confidently navigate an FJ through all of the points of sail
  • Sail around a racing course
  • Demonstrate proper body position within the boat
  • SAIL FAST!

All Intermediate Lessons are taught by US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Certified Instructors.

Prerequisites: We assume that you have passed our learn-to-sail course on the Flying Scot or have equivalent experience. See the curriculum overview of our learn-to-sail course to judge your skill level, or contact us if you have any questions. If you have not sailed for a while consider taking our refresher course first. We also assume that if you sign up for this course that you can swim 100 yards in clothes and tread water for 2 minutes.
